NINJAs in the OFFICE.. "ACTION!"

(download)

I've recently been working on my first feature film. This film has had it's ups-and-downs, as I guess, any low budget (or high budget) film has. I'm pretty happy with all of the score now. There are only one or two cues I would change if I had time and energy.

I'll be blogging about the sound in another post. There have been challenges. Glad to say that we have overcome most of these.

I'd like to share a cue from this picture. This doesn't give away any of the film plot, so don't worry!

It starts with a sad moment moving into a build-up to a big task ('we know what we gotta do") moment for the protagonists. Then a deadly game of 'cat and mouse'  breaks out as the hero and his lady try to evade the henchmen sent to capture them. Then a chase and reminder to the hero what's at stake if he fails.. by way of Flashbacks

This cue was originally written a lot less 'epic' and was more understated, but the producers felt that it needed to be much bigger; which lead to this Hollywood 'Epic' chase score that you now hear. I like it, but I'm sure most people who hear it will say:-

"It's a Batman/ Inception/ Transformers rip-off"...

Ah well.. That's the trend at the moment I guess. I thank you Zimmer et al . I will strive to peel away from the mainstream eventually, but for now, with my deadlines... I'll do as I'm told (and paid to do)!

I'm happy with the way it turned out.. It's pretty big and epic.. there are even some 'BWWAAAAAAAHHHHP' inception moments in it.. and..cowbell.. yep you heard.. I used a cowbell.. slowed it down, delayed, compressed and EQ'd.. it's amazing how a cowbell can sound so 'EPIC' when detuned and effected!

I'm still learning, be gentle with your critiques..Yes I will take heed and try to get better. This is the best I can do on this given day. Tomorrow may yield greater things! I hope I have another opportunity to make another movie one day... It is excruciating, tiring, stressful and glorious!

Hong Kong:- open landfill

Litter0205_468x550

So, I went to Tai Po yesterday and we had a great day out, but I was really dissapointed to see how much litter the was everywhere we went... yes I may be getting old because this stuff relaly bothers me nowadays.... funny how things change.

Dog poop, plastic bottles, crisp packets, styrofoam lunch boxes....

Seriously, don't children here get taught not to throw litter on the floor? especially in the countryside. It's hard enough to find nature in Hong Kong! You go out to enjoy trees and bees and flowers and even mozzies, but you get an open landfill... not on!! not on at all...
I'll be teaching the kids at my school... drilling it into them.

I want to organize a team of my students to go out in the winter and clean up some of these places...then we should educate people not to throw the stuff in the first place.

Most of the stuff you can see should be recycled!!!

Tumble ALL IS OKAY NOW!

So, I was just heading out to buy stuff to make a special dinner for my special girls when I heard my wife screaming in fear coming from my flat... I flew back to the door to find my wife holding Belle and blood pouring out of Belle's mouth..... literally pouring.. like she'd been shot in the face!

I don't know how, but I managed to stay calm... Ada was freaking out! So I had a baby bleeding heavily from the mouth and my pregnant wife beside herself!

Ada breifly explained what had happened and I realised that Belle had simply bit her lip.

She had been standing on the bed playing with mummy and then she slipped and landed on her chin... biting pretty much all the way through her lip.....

Lips like to bleed, and then some!!!!

She almost immediately stopped bleeding after I held her. She also had a grape in her mouth when it happened.........

Which ended up on the floor covered in blood. A red grape, covered in blood.. looked like a tongue!

Anyway. She's fine now but has a swollen lip with bite marks at the bottom.

Poor little thing. That's REALLY painful.

emulation for the nation

I've been trying out the new VOX AC30 amplug.. Sounds pretty good.

M suggests that I buy a line 6 amp emulator box. It has loads of amp emulators built in. I'm going to test his out later next week. He has the combo version.

I'm also very intersted in the FENDER BASSMAN pedal from BOSS.. it apparently emulates the sound of the old classic '52 amp....

This guy needs a haircut and a temazepam, but he can REALLY play...

operatoR Goes Pro

operatoR has it's first gig lined up at 'Speak Up';  Kate Sullivan's amazing networking night.

It'll be a stripped-down affair but not unplugged.

Amazing that the first gig is PAID!!!  That means that operatoR is now pro.

The new JAG sounded like a dream last night! It really sounds great against V's Les Paul.. two very different flavours.

J's drumming was spot on last night and E's voice gives Janice a run for her money. V's guitar work was TOP! and I managed to do alright too! M was not available... pity, but I'm sure he'll be ready for the next practice.

Still can't remember those bloody lyrics... I think I'll put the words on a stand just in case

Enter the 'Jaguar'

After many years (only my whole life) I've finally managed to find a Fender USA '62 re-issue Jaguar that is affordable.

The long story; shortish.

A few weeks ago, I went to Tom Lee Music (the only bloody music shop in Hong Kong with good stuff) and saw a very nice 'Olympic White Jag' with rather a large dent in it. I inspected the twanger and found that the damage was purely cosmetic and could be filled and re-painted to fix... but I quite like the 'ding' on it.. adds character.

Anyway, I spoke to 'Lok', my mate there, and said that there would be no extra discount because of the damage..... so I gave up and went home.

The other day I went in again to look at a reverb pedal and a new thing called a AMPLUG by vox. I asked another guy about the price and he said that I could get a bargain for it... so I pushed the guy hard... sat there and said:

"I'll play this guitar here until you give me a price that I agree with."
Eventually I got it for a third off.

No case, mind you... but I didn't need another case in my place and I already have too many gig bags.

Did I need another guitar?...... Rationally speaking, HELL NO!... I could do what I do with my original Epi...

But I will always 'NEED' another guitar.. however, I really feel that I have a complete collection right now.

Strange; but they REALLY are like mistresses.. That was my wife's wording! Playing my guitars makes me happy. that's all.

Gibson ES-359 custom
Gibson SG special
Fender Jaguar '62 re-issue
Epiphone Sheraton
Vintage (brand name not actually vintage) Jazzer style Accoustic.
Ibanez Jetking Bass
Yamaha 1/2 size Spanish Style... which I use at my school for 'Twinkle Twinkle' duties.

Any more guitars would be foolhardy...
