NINJAs in the OFFICE.. "ACTION!"
I've recently been working on my first feature film. This film has had it's ups-and-downs, as I guess, any low budget (or high budget) film has. I'm pretty happy with all of the score now. There are only one or two cues I would change if I had time and energy.
I'll be blogging about the sound in another post. There have been challenges. Glad to say that we have overcome most of these.
I'd like to share a cue from this picture. This doesn't give away any of the film plot, so don't worry!
It starts with a sad moment moving into a build-up to a big task ('we know what we gotta do") moment for the protagonists. Then a deadly game of 'cat and mouse' breaks out as the hero and his lady try to evade the henchmen sent to capture them. Then a chase and reminder to the hero what's at stake if he fails.. by way of Flashbacks
This cue was originally written a lot less 'epic' and was more understated, but the producers felt that it needed to be much bigger; which lead to this Hollywood 'Epic' chase score that you now hear. I like it, but I'm sure most people who hear it will say:-
"It's a Batman/ Inception/ Transformers rip-off"...
Ah well.. That's the trend at the moment I guess. I thank you Zimmer et al . I will strive to peel away from the mainstream eventually, but for now, with my deadlines... I'll do as I'm told (and paid to do)!
I'm happy with the way it turned out.. It's pretty big and epic.. there are even some 'BWWAAAAAAAHHHHP' inception moments in it.. and..cowbell.. yep you heard.. I used a cowbell.. slowed it down, delayed, compressed and EQ'd.. it's amazing how a cowbell can sound so 'EPIC' when detuned and effected!
I'm still learning, be gentle with your critiques..Yes I will take heed and try to get better. This is the best I can do on this given day. Tomorrow may yield greater things! I hope I have another opportunity to make another movie one day... It is excruciating, tiring, stressful and glorious!
