WHAT I TALK ABOUT WHEN I TALK ABOUT RUNNING

I missed my Sunday run due to a silly late night with 'Marc'. Marc is the new bass player for operatoR.

Next week we'll be jamming with the drummer and we can really make some progress. I'm gonna start putting the songson a loop on the old POD and drill those lyrics into my grey matter.

Stickmen

So things are now going ahead with the band 'operatoR.'

We put an ad out via the 'Speakup' network.. and boy, was it successful?!

About 3 drummers (men with sticks) called on the same day.

Our Idea is to do some striaght-out rock'n'roll combo gigs to gell as a band and then do an event... and then...... do some music for the soundtrack of The Deathloop.

I'll be busy meeting new drummers next week and we're meeting a bassist (actually a really good guitarist.. probably much better than me) on Saturday.. He is a guitarist afficianado (sp.?)

Looking forward to his reaction to Isabelle359. Maybe he can teach me some new stuff?

Now all I need to do is work on some new tunes and record the cover we intend to do..... next week! after JC is done.

JC

Tonight I'll be meeting about the 'Hijack' project and then I'll be off home to fianalize the JC music. Loads of tiny changes to make and I have to do the DULL task of re- numbering the cues!!

HI-JACK

For 'Hijack' I think I'll deligate most of the FX work to a friend of mine. Fai (a movie sound guy).

I'll work on the music. The intro will be 60's HK music and the incidental will be penned by my own fair hand. I'm thinking of using the budget to writing some very cool string stuff, which I can then use for promotion.

LET IT BE (GO)
Working on another film project as of next week. With award-winning director D Chan. He wants music like Hisiashi, so totally up my street! 4 pieces by October. he said the mood of the film will follow my music.. so not too much pressure then!!

After I've done demo's of my this music we are looking to record some of it live. I think I'll go with Spanish Guitar, Cello and Piano. I'll need to borrow a decent Spanish Guitar... Dad has a REALLY good one!!

RUNNING on FLU
I've managed to avoid the usual excuses for not running this time (too tired, injured leg, no time). I've done about 10km this week and will do some more on Sunday. A longer run..

Trouble is, loads of kids have flu at my school... about 50-60 and I'm pretty sure I'm fighting it.. hot nose, and watery eyes... headache etc.

Does the running help flush it out, or make it worse? I guess as long as I sleep well and drink enough water I should be able to fight it.

4 confirmed cases of Swine Flu. One of them in my class... and I teach about 300 kids so If anyones gonna get it.. it'll be me!
Pics below are ISABELLE359, (the new guitar)

The Running Man

Self Improvement abound!!

After hearing about Eddie Izzard's staggering 42 marathons in 50 days (or something like that) I thought it was about time that I start to move my fat ass and get in shape.

I've joined a 10KM run for UNICEF. A good cause, but the best cause is to get myself fit and heathly so I can watch my kids grow up and be energetic enough to be as good as the father I have! (He is a Marathon Runner.)

My father, always an inspiration, started getting into running when he was 35. I am now 32 and so I guess I can get a head start. I suppose I should be aiming for a marathon by the age of 35, if not before.

I never used to like running AT ALL, but recently the idea of that 'me' time has be very attractive.

So, I started 2 weeks ago and I will be running every other day for the next two weeks and slowly building that up to 5 days a week.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday. The Sunday run will be a special along the harbour or out in the new territories. I want to give my lungs a treat and let them experience some nice fresh air at least once a week.

I've got up to just under 4KM and it has not been that hard.......... yet.

I've had minor problems with my knees in the past (ITB injury) but I'm sure I can avoid injury with the proper stretching.

My dad is helping me with my training schedule and giving me some valuable advice (such as don't drink too much water at the beginning otherwise you'll need to pee halfway through the race!),

So far the schedule looks like this:

Week 2 3 days 3 - 4 KM
Week 3 3 days 4 - 5 KM
Week 4 4 days 5 - 6 KM
Week 5 4 days 6 - 7 KM
Week 6 5 days 7 - 8 KM
Week 7 5 days 7 - 8 KM
Week 8 5 days 8 - 9 KM
Week 9 5 days 9 -10KM
Week 10 5 days 9 - 10 KM
RACE!

WEEK 2
This week so far
SUNDAY 3KM
MONDAY 4KM
TUESDAY ------
WEDNESDAY 4KM
THURSDAY
FRIDAY

LET ITALLGO

I've just started work on a new pre-vis project for a film in development.

It's an interesting one.

The director has some extremely clear ideas about the design of a  ******** to be created as a Digital Matte Painting.

I'm working on a CGI model so he can create a pre-vis teaser.
I'm not sure how much info I can give away at the moment.

I'll be asking permission from the Production team about posting some of my concept work here.... watch this space.....

Here's a little taste of what dreams may come......(SEE ABOVE ....sadly, it's NOT MY WORK!!!!!!)

Agent 8- A primary school movie project

So.... I've been teaching kids at my school how to make a movie... Ada, my wife, pointed out that actually I'm making a movie and using the kids as my lab rats!

There is some truth in this, but I'm sure they have learned a lot in the process. They have all spoken English every lesson...Chinese is not allowed!

We still have some blue screen shots to do, but the ones we've done look really nice.

Work flow for a primary school movie:

brainstorming story
scripting
script breakdown
casting
story-boarding
prop and set scouting
Protocol set up
crew allocation
Principle photography - spread over many lessons
Editing
CG set design
Compositing
sound design
music
final edit
render

So far I'm compositing and designing sets. The ability to make CG sets in Sketchup and render with Podium has allowed us to follow the students imaginations. Yes, the camera is always static, but, with a little thought, we can do some very realistic and fun stuff.

I'll upload the finished movie to this blog when it's finished.

It'll be a few more weeks.

Pictures below are examples include colour correction. I used a simple choke filter and added animated snow. The background was taken from google images.

Note: Try to get the crew to where black or clear the area behind the camera... you can see the kids reflected in Mike's glasses!

I am not selling this film or trying to get money for it. It's purley educational.

LUMINA:- Light Speed

LUMINA UPDATE!
'Fai the sound guy' has sweetened the dialogue for 3 episodes with very few ADR flags!
Meeting with Jen to talk about story and design concepts next week and then it'll be full speed ahead.
'
Ambience recording and FX collection is in progress.
Still thinking about the sound design of the mirror world ...... When I have more idea about the structure/concepts behind the mirror 'kingdom'(?), I can premeptively design the sound of a world.
For the Theme tune, I'm going to to get my good friend MV to collanabrate on this. I thnk his darkeneering talents will be put to a good use and then the 'Mstr collective' can get a bit more publicity.
Well. The hour is upon us and it's time for a rousing speech by our Director.

"Now is the time for us to stand united and collabor....colliberay....collubinar....work together"

TechnicalSoupRant
Part 1: Pro Tools schmo-tools!

Bettina, our editor, has sent OMF files. These are incredibly useful. They timecode everything so dialogue editor can easily synch up the audio files to the picture and assemble them into a correct track order for easy 'sweetening'. They even include fades and pans and HANDLES.

'Handles' allow the dialogue editor seconds before and after an audio clip in order to facilitate a smooth transition, ambiance etc etc.

So I opened up the Holy Pro-Tools and went to put a turkey in the oven while it started up.

Then I imported the OMF files and Pro-Tools immediately recognized the files and started to arrange them in specific EQ categories. Then it started to clean the audio automatically and dialed a pizza for me. After that it gave me a massage and poured me a ice cold beer in my favourite glass....I woke up.

Pro Tools and I are not the best of friends... Digidesign charges $10,000HK to allow you to open OMF files! *&^(&^*%*%%&^%$%$^$#^@^! <insert expletives here>

Even Sonar ( the poor relation of DAWs) opens bloody OMF's!!
Digidesign You $%&#^s,  Can I get a refund?
I guess I should have read the (oh-so-easy-and-clearly-written) info.

Anyway, needless to say, I will be going back to my trusty Audition 3/Sonar8.0 arrangement. Stick to what you know best. adn the job will be done well.

PRO-TOOLS (NO-TOOLS more like!)

IN NUENDO
'Fai-the-sound-guy' will be editing the dialogue in NUENDO so, I need to save my pennies to buy that one (eventually). Acording to Eric Stark at Shaw Studios here in Hongkers, Nuendo is the best app for premix. and then they bounce down for final mix in 'NO-TOOLS'
(Don't get me started!)

Part 2: DESIGN

I'll go out to record some trams and boats and things this week to flesh out the ambiances. I also want to add some otherworldly stuff during the mirror spy stuff.

The problem is, that many people will be watching this on the web, maybe in some small speakers, so the lows are going to be missing. Sublety in the mix will also be missing.

Do I aim for the audience who has good speakers?
Do I go with a BRICK SUBTLE piece to please the masses??
I suppose it should be somewhere in between... or have it in your face and have aloads orf little subtle things happening fopr the audiophiles...

I may be penning a lot more music that I thought.

But, I do it 'coz I love it!
